Why the clamp method is required

A four-jaw rim-clamp machine can publish different outside and inside clamping limits. Center-clamp machines may instead publish one general rim range. The Fit Checker asks you to choose which field you want evaluated so one kind of range is never substituted for another.

Motorcycle and ATV checks include the application setup

If the manufacturer publishes motorcycle or ATV support for the exact model, the tool can show that directly. If only an optional adapter pathway is published, the result keeps that adapter requirement visible. If neither is documented, the result tells you to check the application or adapter details with the manufacturer even when the rim diameter itself is inside the published range.

For heavy-duty truck machines, use the general published rim range

Heavy-duty truck tire changers generally use hydraulic chucks or tulip-style clamping rather than an automotive turntable's outside/inside jaws. When you select a heavy-duty machine, choose General published rim range so the checker evaluates the field the manufacturer actually publishes.

The result still checks overall tire diameter and published width separately. It does not treat equipment selection as a substitute for the machine manual or the training and rim-wheel procedures that apply to heavy commercial service.

Why some details need a manual check

A missing or disputed specification is not a reason to guess. When current manufacturer pages disagree—for example on the KATOOL KT-T830 maximum clamp range—the tool identifies the affected specification and tells you to verify it rather than inventing a maximum.

Worked example: Atlas TC229 shows a clear pass and a clear outside-limit case

Atlas TC229 publishes an outside-clamp range of 9.75–23.25 inches, an inside-clamp range of 11.625–25.25 inches, a 39-inch maximum tire diameter and a 13-inch published wheel-width limit. If you select outside clamping and enter a 23-inch rim, 38-inch tire diameter and 12-inch width, those numeric values are inside the published fields.

Change only the outside-clamp rim input to 24 inches and the result should identify the 23.25-inch outside maximum as the failing limit. Selecting inside clamping is a separate test; the tool does not automatically switch methods just because the inside range is larger.

Width needs careful interpretation because manufacturers publish different fields

Some tire changers publish maximum tire width; others publish maximum wheel width. Those values are not automatically interchangeable. The Fit Checker uses the width label the manufacturer publishes and tells you whether it evaluated tire width or wheel width.

This prevents a common compatibility shortcut: treating any “13-inch width” specification as though every manufacturer measured the same thing. If the manufacturer does not provide the width field needed for a responsible decision, the result tells you which manufacturer specification still needs to be checked.

When manufacturer specifications differ

KATOOL KT-T830 currently has different live manufacturer values for maximum outside/inside clamping, voltage and weight. The Fit Checker leaves those disputed fields out of a precise fit decision. It can still use specifications that agree across the current sources, such as the 41-inch maximum tire diameter, assist-arm configuration and published air pressure.

The result therefore tells you exactly which specification to check instead of choosing the more convenient value.

After a pass, check configuration and operating requirements

A within-published-limits result is the start of the purchase check, not the end. Confirm whether any motorcycle/ATV clamp set is included or optional, whether difficult-tire hardware is standard, and whether the shop can meet the exact voltage and compressed-air requirement.
