Tire Changer Wheel Lifts: Match the Lift to the Changer

A wheel lift can reduce the strain of moving heavy tire-and-wheel assemblies onto a changer, but lift capacity alone does not prove compatibility. Match the lift to the exact machine, installation type, air supply and working space.

A tire changer wheel lift is about handling the assembly — not expanding tire capacity

A wheel lift raises a tire-and-wheel assembly from floor level to the tire changer's working height so the technician does not have to carry the full weight onto the table or clamp. That can matter more as SUV, light-truck, performance and EV assemblies become heavier.

The lift's capacity is separate from the changer's clamping and tire-size limits. A 150-pound lift does not make a passenger tire changer suitable for a wheel or tire that is outside the machine's published range.

Coats Maxx models are a clear example: current product pages publish separate machine part numbers for versions with the wheel lift installed from the factory.

Best when: you are buying a new machine and want the lift integrated from day one.

Model-specific retrofit

The lift mounts to a compatible changer

Atlas WL-2, Hunter TCX wheel-lift kits and Ranger RWL-150T are model/series-specific retrofit examples. The mounting hardware and machine geometry matter, so these should not be chosen by lift capacity alone.

Best when: the existing changer is explicitly listed as compatible.

Built into the machine

The wheel lift is part of the changer design

Hunter Revolution and some premium center-clamp/automatic machines use the lift as part of the machine itself. There is no reason to shop for a separate retrofit unless the manufacturer documents one.

Best when: lifting and positioning are integral to the machine's operating design.

Separate shop lift

A portable wheel lift is not the same as a changer-mounted lift

Some wheel lifts are freestanding or designed for balancers. They can still reduce manual handling, but they do not automatically align with a tire changer's table or mounting points.

Best when: the shop needs flexible lifting help across more than one station.

Coats Maxx

Factory-installed Maxx lift configurations

Coats publishes wheel-lift versions of the current Maxx 70, 80 and 90. The Maxx lift is rated to raise assemblies up to 150 pounds to the 29-inch tabletop and is foot-pedal operated. Current machine part numbers use an L suffix for the lift-equipped configuration, such as 800MAXX70220L and 800MAXX90220L.

Check before ordering: voltage/air-drive configuration as well as the changer model. The lift-equipped machine number is not the same as the base machine number.

Coats RC/C/X Series

85608609 point-of-use lift system

Coats lists 85608609 as its point-of-use lift system and publishes it as an optional accessory across compatible RC, C and X Series changers. The 2026 catalog specifically lists it for current center-clamp models such as the 80C.

Check before ordering: exact model compatibility through Coats, especially if the changer is older than the current RC/C/X families.

Hunter TCX & Maverick

Hunter publishes different lift kits by changer family

Hunter's current accessory guide identifies 20-2045-1 for most TCX table-top models, 20-3863-1 for TCX51C, and 20-3884-1 for the Maverick TCM family. That is a strong example of why “Hunter wheel lift” is not a single interchangeable accessory.

Check before ordering: the exact TCX/TCM model and whether the lift is already standard on the chosen configuration.

Atlas

ATEATTC-WL-2 — front-mounted pneumatic lift

Atlas rates the WL-2 at 150 pounds. It front-mounts directly on the TC755 and Atlas says it can be fitted to 200 Series changers with modification.

Check before ordering: TC755 is the cleanest direct fit; 200 Series installation is a modified fit and should be treated differently from a bolt-on exact match.

Ranger

RWL-150T / SKU 5150355

Ranger rates the RWL-150T at 150 pounds and publishes a minimum air supply of 125 PSI at 8 CFM. The R980XR is consistently listed as compatible. Current Ranger pages also point to the R980DP, but older wording still remains in the same documentation.

Check before ordering: verify R980DP fit with Ranger because the current product title and R980DP page name R980DP, while the RWL body copy and downloadable sheet still name the older R980AT.

Hunter Revolution

The lift is built into the operating design

Hunter's Revolution literature describes a built-in space-saving wheel lift and publishes machine dimensions with the lift raised and lowered. This is not the same decision as adding an accessory lift to a conventional table-top changer.

Check before ordering: compare the complete machine footprint and electrical/air requirements, not a separate lift part number.

Air supply can be a separate requirement for the lift

A pneumatic wheel lift can add its own air demand. Ranger, for example, publishes 125 PSI and 8 CFM for the RWL-150T, while Coats publishes 150 PSI for the Maxx wheel lift. Do not assume the changer's ordinary operating pressure alone proves the lift will perform correctly.

If a lift is part of the planned setup, include it when checking the shop air supply.

Check floor space with the lift both stored and in use

A changer's cabinet footprint can understate the space the bay actually needs. A side-mounted or front-mounted lift adds moving space around the machine, and some designs fold or store differently when not in use. Hunter's Revolution specification sheet even publishes different depth values with the wheel lift up and down.

Before installation, plan for the wheel path from the floor to the table, technician access, air hoses and any door/tower movement. A lift that technically mounts to the machine can still be awkward if the bay is too tight to use it comfortably.

Five checks before buying or specifying a wheel lift

  1. Exact changer model: use the manufacturer's compatibility statement, not a similar-looking mounting bracket.
  2. Lift capacity: compare the rated lift capacity with the heaviest assemblies the shop actually handles.
  3. Air requirement: confirm pressure and flow for the lift, not only the base changer.
  4. Installation type: distinguish factory-installed, direct retrofit, modified retrofit and built-in systems.
  5. Working space: leave room for the lift and wheel to travel without blocking the operator or another machine.

The best wheel lift is the one the manufacturer actually supports on the tire changer you need. Start with wheel and tire capacity, difficult-tire features and shop utilities; then compare the exact lift or lift-equipped configuration.
