The VSCT models change the motor, not the basic size decision
The W-8940-VSCT and W-8980-VSCT are the current variable-speed versions of the two main clamp families. Weaver describes the upgrade as a direct-drive Variable Speed Constant Torque motor. That creates a straightforward two-step decision: first decide whether the smaller 894 or larger 898 clamping family fits the wheels you service, then decide whether the standard XP motor or variable-speed VSCT drive is worth the additional equipment cost for your workload.
Start with the wheel sizes, then compare the tire-handling features

The W-PL240 assist arm is the important difficult-tire option
Weaver sells the W-PL240 pneumatic assist arm for the W-894XP, W-898XP, W-8940-VSCT and W-8980-VSCT. The current product and combo information describes the arm with bead-pressing and lifting functions for tough low-profile and run-flat tires. That is much stronger evidence than assuming the standard machine is a difficult-tire specialist simply because it has a large clamping range.
If low-profile or stiff-sidewall work is frequent, compare the base machine and the assist-arm combination as different configurations. If that work is rare, the base changer may be a more economical path while keeping the option to add assistance later.
Motorcycle use has two different Weaver paths
The W-M807X is the dedicated motorcycle/ATV choice. Its current page publishes a 6–24 inch clamping range, 38.5-inch maximum tire diameter, 13-inch maximum tire width, extra-tall protected clamps and clearance intended for motorcycle brake discs and sprockets.
The second path is an automotive 894/898-family machine with Weaver's W-MC/ATV adapter set. Derek Weaver publishes series- and position-specific adapter ranges rather than calling the accessory universally compatible with every rim size. That distinction matters: the adapter becomes part of the exact clamping setup, and the company notes that the bead blaster can be out of its normal position when the adapter set is used.
For a shop that mostly services motorcycles, the dedicated W-M807X can be simpler. For a general repair shop that occasionally sees motorcycles, an automotive changer plus the documented adapter may make more sense. Weaver publishes unusually specific shop-air requirements
The current W-894XP, W-898XP and W-M807X pages publish 5 CFM at 150–175 PSI, with the machine regulator set to 140 PSI. The W-894XP and W-898XP also publish 1.5 HP, 110 V and a 20-amp electrical requirement. Those are useful planning numbers because pressure and delivered airflow are separate compressor requirements.
Do not size the compressor from tank gallons alone. Check that the compressor can deliver the required airflow at the relevant pressure and that the electrical circuit matches the exact changer. Do not read the clamp range as the wheel's labeled rim diameter
Derek Weaver repeatedly warns that the published clamping figures are measurements across the clamps, not simply the wheel's nominal rim diameter. Outside clamping also has to account for flange height. This is exactly the kind of detail that can make two seemingly identical “22-inch” claims mean different things in practice.
Weaver also separates ordinary passenger/light-truck work from the larger half-inch heavy-duty rim sizes such as 17.5, 19.5 and 22.5. The company directs those larger heavy-ply applications toward a truck tire changer rather than implying that a large passenger-machine clamp number makes the machine heavy-duty.
Direct purchase, freight and parts support belong in the buying decision
