Coats Tire Changers: Choose Between RC, Maxx and Heavy-Duty CHD Machines

Choose the Coats family by the work in your shop
Coats currently spans several tire-changer styles rather than one machine with a long option list. For ordinary passenger and light-truck service, the decision usually starts with the RC and Maxx rim-clamp families. The Maxx 70, 80 and 90 progressively add helper hardware, while the 90 changes the mount/demount approach with a leverless bead lifter. Shops handling true commercial truck, agricultural or off-road assemblies move into the CHD family instead.
That distinction matters more than the badge on the cabinet. A high-volume passenger shop may value the Maxx 80 or 90 for assist hardware and bead seating, while a fleet or truck shop needs the wheel-handling range and hydraulic chuck of the CHD machines.

Maxx 70, 80 and 90: the practical step-up
The Maxx models share a 50-inch maximum tire diameter and 16-inch published wheel-width limit, so the decision is not simply “buy the one with the biggest tire number.” The meaningful differences are in how each machine handles difficult tire assemblies.
Maxx 70 is the simpler high-volume path with the Robo-Arm bead depressor. Maxx 80 adds the RoboRoller and gives the technician both hand and foot bead-loosening control. Maxx 90 adds a leverless bead lifter and 2-speed electric configuration, making it the more natural Coats path when expensive custom wheels, stiff sidewalls and difficult low-profile or run-flat assemblies are a regular part of the workload.
Coats also sells multiple power configurations on parts of the Maxx range, including electric and air-motor versions. The exact part number therefore matters when you plan shop power and compressed air.

When the CHD series is the better Coats path
A Maxx machine is still a passenger/light-truck rim-clamp changer. A CHD machine is built around a hydraulic four-jaw chuck and large-assembly handling. The CHD 6330 is the compact entry to that heavy-duty path; the CHD 9041 extends the application range into larger agricultural work; and the CHD 9551 goes farther again for very large off-road and agricultural tires.

Air, electrical service and wheel handling still matter
For Maxx machines, Coats publishes 110–175 psi and 15 scfm for the air-motor specification shown on current product pages. Optional wheel lifts also have their own air requirements. Use the Tire Changer Air Supply Checker for exact machines where enough PSI and CFM information is published.
For CHD equipment, electrical phase becomes a larger issue. The CHD 6330 has both single- and three-phase configurations, while the larger CHD 9041 and CHD 9551 are three-phase in the current specifications shown here. That can change the installed cost even when the machine itself is a good application fit.
